Marty Blaustein loved his new car. That is, until it almost killed him and his wife, Betzy, in their sleep. The Blausteins near-death experience came in the early hours on a recent morning in a quiet Punta Gorda neighborhood.

We woke up because we heard like an alarm going off, said Marty, It was the carbon monoxide detectors I never thought much of them, I assumed they were just smoke detectors.

Marty grabbed a stool and reached the devices attached to the ceiling to shut them off. I was going to go back to bed, but Betzy talked me into trying to nd out what was going on, Marty said.

Marty, with Betzy at his side, went to check in the garage. When I opened the door, I was hit like this, Marty recently recalled, as he threw his hands up and jerked back.

I was almost overcome by the fumes. I looked through this haze that was in the garage and I could see headlights. My car was on. About nine hours earlier, Marty had plugged in his Chevrolet Volt, so the hybrid electric car could charge.

Charlotte County is considering several options to improve trac ow, including a realignment of Sandhill. Rude awakeningCounty looks to fix busy intersectionPat Knox spent part of Monday tallying up the 30 or more families who, since January, have given up on Englewood and left.

Some have stopped by and said they lost their jobs and dont have the money to pay their rents, said Knox, who serves as St. Davids Episcopal Church outreach manager and oversees the churchs food pantry.

She doesnt know where theyre going, but as families leave, the homeless population grows. According to Knox, Englewood is seeing an increase in its homeless adult population, which she suspects are homeless adults heading south from the city of Sarasota.

According to a study of homelessness in Sarasota County, the county has more than 1, homeless adults with 86 per cent living in North County.

South County sees more homeless families. The study documented more than homeless students in the countys school system and pointed out those numbers did not include children under 5 years old.

The Charlotte County Homeless Coalition reports that it serves an average of hot dinners each night, and its food pantry each month provides a three-day supply of food for families and individuals.

Salvador Olmos and Penelope A. They patrons are so happy that we are back open again. Im happy and Im glad that its reopened, said Springs general manager Mary Putnik.

Everybody has been so happy that they can come back in. We all missed it when it was closed. Putnik, who has reached her 20th year as a Springs employee, has been through both temporary closings of the Springs, the latest on Aug.

Putnik is hoping to stay in her position with the Springs until she decides to retire. Saturday it was so wet because of all the rain Friday and then we couldnt open because of the alligator, Putnik said.

Patrons were kept outside at Saturday mornings planned reopening due to the 4-footer lurking around the waters of the degree, mineral-rich natural spring.

The alligator trappers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission got him out the same day, Putnik said.

The gator was trapped late Saturday afternoon. The visitors who swam and waded in the water Monday afternoon spent close to an hour in the Springs.

Most were local residents, though a few visitors hung out on the property for the rst time. Shannon Nash, a Bradenton resident, heard about the Springs from a religious man a while ago and nally decided to pay the spiritual place a visit.

I met a Shaman who told me about this and told me I should come here. I came here to see what its all about, Nash said. I dont know all the details, but if theyre commissioners not representing the community as a whole, the community needs to elect ofcials who are advocates for the citizens.

These people dont seem to be looking out for the society just themselves. This place is all of ours, its to be shared, Nash said.

Following a nice, long soak, North Port residents Joe Kreisel, accompanied by his wife Eugenia, spoke to the Sun about the future of the Springs and how he felt about the citys steps to acquire the beloved property.

The Kreisels, who had previously visited the Springs on a daily basis, said they were thrilled that the attraction was back open and that the city had cut ties with the county on the property.

The partnership was completely sterile. I think they did well, and now that North Port has it to itself, they can move forward. All that happened with the purchase that needs to be left in the past.

The commissioners did very well, except for Mayor Jim Blucher. Blucher wasnt interested in the people of North Port. Hes not interested in the people who moved here and invested here.

People dont move here for the Lowes, the Walmart or the lively North Port nightlife. They move here for the Springs , right there.

Joe called Bluchers dissenting votes on the Springs purchase a disservice to the people of North Port. He added that the Springs is the only thing his wife gets really happy and enthusiastic about following the death of her son, and the attraction is special to the couple.

They seem to be moving in the right direction now. I give my hearty applause to them commissioners. Now that they are unrestricted from the county, maybe they can get things done around here.

We really hope so, Joe said. When Blucher voted against the transaction last week, he said, North Port should not be investing this much money without some private help.

The Springs is currently open to the public for swimming only. Im happy with the company. They are a great company and they do a good job, Putnik said.

The Springs attracts visitors from all over the world, like this newlywed couple celebrating their honeymoon, who heard about the Springs from Florida residents.

A Ukrainian womens group decided to meet at the new coffee shop Monday morning, and they said everything seemed perfect.

Were enjoying pumpkin spice lattes, even though it doesnt get very cold in Florida, said Galima Kovtunovich, one woman in the group. Another woman, Lisa Kroks, said her daughter always goes to the Starbucks in Venice, but she wanted to try out the new location.

Usually I drink tea, but I had to try the coffee here to see what it was all about, Kroks said. Everyone in the womens group said they were very excited about the new drive-thru and how much more convenient it would make getting their morning coffee.

The couple owns a home manufactur ing business in North Port, and they have expanded it to Sarasota. We have been waiting for a Starbucks here for 30 years, Sharon said.

The couple sat on the outside patio of the shop, drinking coffee in the shade before the afternoon heat hit.

Sandhill is now a curving, three-lane road, with turn lanes down the center, that winds from Kings Highway south until it turns east and straightens out heading into Deep Creek.

While there are two left-turn lanes allowing trafc onto Kings Highway, peak hours regularly see trafc back-ups in these lanes. Oliver Rodrigues, FTE senior vice president, described the left turns off Sandhill Boulevard as a critical movement due to the volume of drivers getting on Interstate He added that, if nothing is done as the trafc count grows, Sandhill will become decient within ve years, with Kings Highway following suit.

The current average number of cars that travel daily along Sandhill is 16,, which is up 1, from last year, according to the Charlotte County Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Projections show the trafc count reaching 21, by the year , between Deep Creek Boulevard and Kings Highway, earning an F for its quality of service if improvements arent forthcoming.

Similarly, the segment of Kings Highway between I and Veterans Boulevard, which now registers an average daily trafc count of 35,, up from 3, last year, would earn a failing grade as well in 20 years if something is not done.

By , it is estimated there would be a daily average of 51, on this stretch of road. Deep Creek Boulevard, north of Sandhill, also is approaching capacity.

In just the last year, aver age daily trafc nearly doubled to 11, and is already at a D service level. All three proposals presented to county leaders included widening Sandhill Boulevard by at least two lanes.

The other two options call for constructing a new highway traveling northwest along the FPL easement, from a point on Sandhill east of Deep Creek Boulevard to a new intersection at Kings Highway.

However, initial inquiries to FPL about using its land were not promising, Rodrigues said. We did not receive an encouraging response, he said.

He said the shorter route would be less expensive to build and motorists would easily gure out how to nd the shortcut in order to save time. Still another possibility, less expensive and more short term, would be to merely extend the two left-turn lanes on Sandhill Boulevard.

In further discussion, it was made clear that the Walmart Supercenter, constructed near the Kings-Sandhill inter section in , is not part of the problem.

Commissioners directed the consultant to, once again, approach FPL about the use of its land. The report noted that the Blausteins would have died, had they not been alerted to the danger in their home.

Thats the rst time in my 17 years as a reghter that Ive seen one wake someone up in the middle of the night in a house that doesnt have gas appliances.

But it shows you they can save lives. Furious, Marty contacted General Motors he was done with the Volt. Marty thinks the car turned on by itself; GM thinks he left it on.

Regardless, the former Volt driver was concerned that the car didnt have the ability to shut itself off if the engine was on and the car was plugged in.

GM agreed to let Marty terminate his lease. She added that the newer model Volts have a function that shuts the cars down if the engine is running and they are plugged in to charge.

Marty said hes always been a car guy. Hes owned Corvettes, Camaros, Porsches you name it. But he was intrigued by the modern features offered in the Volt.

I love the technology, Marty said. But, he said almost dying on that Aug. Thats the end of that saga, Marty said. However, he and his wife will never forget they almost werent around to tell it.

Weve had friends and people we tell the story to asking us about the CO detectors, said Betzy, Because we were very lucky to have them.

McElroy said the detectors are included in new houses, but not many older homes have them. The re lieutenant said its not a bad idea to look into getting one if you use gas appliances or keep a car in the garage.

Carbon monoxide is colorless, tasteless and odorless, so you dont even know its there, McElroy said. CO detectors can save people, just like smoke detectors.

Some smoke alarms double as CO alarms, and McElroy said a resident can look right on the device to see what functions it has. CO alarms cost about the same as a smoke alarm, he said.

Jon Thaxton, Gulf Coast Community Foundation director of community investment, and Wayne Applebee, Sarasota County homeless coordinator, are scheduled to give an update on Sarasota Countys homelessness.

Charlotte Sun staff contributed to this report. Sunday, with registration beginning at 4: Bowland Port Charlotte, Harbor Blvd.

Street ooding began early Friday evening, when 4 inches of rain fell locally in less than half an hour. On Saturday, the city received 2 inches of rain, and then 2 more inches on Sunday.

North Port City Manager Jonathan Lewis said it was not the amount of rain that fell, but that it came in a short period of time, causing drainage problems on city streets.

North Port was built on a swamp, and sometimes Mother Nature doesnt like to be controlled, Lewis said.

Lewis said localized ooding within city limits happened Friday and non-localized ooding continued Saturday and Sunday. Non-localized ooding is when rain falls north of the city, and it ows down to North Port, causing ooding in canals and other city water structures.

Lewis said the main problem Friday evening was that heavy rainfall occurred in only 30 minutes at 5: The Public Works department classies passable streets to be roads with less than 6 inches of water covering them.

Jockey Club resident Linda Peterson said street ooding caused a sinkhole on the corner of Woods Lane and Fairbrook Street near her home.

All the driveways on Fairbrook and Shenandoah streets had standing water on Monday, and Peterson said she and some of her neighbors experienced ooding in their backyards.

Thank God it stops after just a little bit or else all the houses would be under, Peterson said. Public Works employ ees came out Monday afternoon to mark off the area of the sinkhole just right of the stop sign at the intersection of Woods and Fairbrook.

One employee said street ooding normally occurs off Biscayne Drive, and it is unusual to get a sinkhole or other ooding in the Jockey Club area.

Lewis said the R Canal, which is a water structure north of Estates Drive, is now full because of rainfall that happened north of the county on Saturday.

Heavy rains have started at a time when the city is currently drafting a new oodplain map that ags many areas of the city as high-risk for ooding.

The new map would recommend that a larger portion of North Ports residents purchase ood insurance for their homes, but the map is only in the drafting stages and will not be nalized until possibly later next year, said Elizabeth Wong, stormwater manager for the city.

No ooding inside homes or businesses was reported from the heavy rainfall this past weekend, but Erin Bryce, city community outreach manager, sent an email to city staff Monday after noon with a list of roads that still had some degree of standing water.

Roads west of Sumter Boulevard off Interstate 75, both north and south, still had standing water as of the citys inspection Monday.

Bryce said the Myakkahatchee Creek rose about 2 feet since Sunday evening, and the city was going to monitor water levels closely through Monday night.

Its ood stage is 7 feet. Forecasters believe the river could continue to rise. Authorities closed the park to the public on Sunday.

Scattered rains moving in from the Gulf of Mexico are expected to last through Tuesday. Rain is expected to subside by Wednesday, and a cold front is anticipated for early next week.

Scattered thunderstorms moving in from the Gulf Saturday after noon could cause a drop in temperatures on Sunday and Monday.

A decrease in humidity will be the significant change as well as temperatures that could drop to 72 degrees. Compiled by Allison Shirk Thursday, October 2 at 2: Refreshments will be provided.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3: Box , Cataumet, MA Lewis, who spent about 20 minutes with the group, said the accusations recently made in a regional newspaper by unnamed Public Works employees in which many admitted to sharing answers during online and classroom testing for Federal Emergency Management Agency certications didnt warrant an investigation.

Some said its been going on for years, long before Lewis became the city manager in No complaint has been made to the Public Works director, Human Resources or to me, Lewis wrote in an email to city commissioners Monday.

He was in meetings most of the day and only available by email. I met and spoke to the Public Works Operations folks and while I covered multiple things the most basic issue is that I would not launch an investigation based on the statement of a reporter.

I reminded them that multiple of them have come and met with me over the three-plus years on a variety of issues from small to big that they are still there so the concept that they would be red if they came to me does not seem to be valid.

If I get a complaint from an employee it will be investigated appropriately. I also made sure that they understood that there would be no investigation into who did or did not speak to a reporter, Lewis wrote.

Vice Mayor Rhonda DiFranco, who is retired from the Sarasota County Sheriffs Ofce, said she understands why an investigation cant take place unless someone speaks up.

She doesnt mind if all employees involved came forward as a group to give information about the testing procedures.

Ive had to go to the FBI when I believed something wasnt right, she said. Without one person having the courage to come forward, I look at it as everyone may have been involved.

It tarnishes the departments image for everyone. DiFranco said she was surprised to learn that the alleged cheating may have also occurred in the Utilities department.

In some cases, a single employee allegedly took the test for other employees. Lewis wrote to the Sun that he was unaware of any testing issues in Utilities.

Now to nd that employees in other departments are going to the newspaper instead of the administration is an issue because we cant look into something and x it or make changes to the policy if we dont have someone come forward, she said.

Its about integrity in the city. Its an insult to the city, government and the residents if you cant be trusted to take a test.

She said she would be angry if she learned there was cheating on certications in the re or police departments. I havent heard that at all, she said.

The police and reghters are really the primary services needed during crisis management situations. Public Works employees are secondary.

They take these tests to learn about incident command. Its really so when they show up after a hurricane or other crisis, they know who is in charge and dont say, Im not listening to you.

Public Works employees really dont even have to take those tests, but like everyone in the county, we have committed to them.

We should make sure the tests are taken properly. We can help if they ask for it, he said. Since no one came forward, they are not investigating.

Rich Berman city emergency manager is also highly qualied to teach these classes, so there are resources available if needed.

In his email to the Sun Lewis wrote, if an employee steps forward we will take meaningful action. More importantly everyone needs to understand why this would not be OK.

Incident command is crucial to a city during recovery from an emergency. Every employee needs at least a basic under standing of the process.

Having been through part of Hurricane Charley, and more specically storms Frances, Jeanne, Fay and Wilma, I know City employees are critical to recovery after an event.

They can be difference makers for a community. Understanding this process is one way to help ensure disaster recovery is done effectively.

Patrick Murphy, a former year Public Works employee, said no worker will come forward to report mass cheating to a supervisor, director or the city manager.

In all tests we took, for everything but our CDL commercial driver license , we were coached and there were cheat sheets, he said, adding many of the employees dont know how to operate computers.

These are guys who operate heavy equipment. One time a guy nearly crushed the dummy during the CPR class and passed and was certied. No one is going to speak up about these things.

If they do, they quickly become targeted. They are a doormat. Then they dont have a job. Murphy noted a recent incident involving a city employee. An employee saw two supervisors rummaging through his vehicle parked at the Public Works yard and called police, he said.

The process became so frustrating for the employee that he withdrew the complaint so the police didnt investigate. It should have been a cut-and-dry case since there are cameras in the yard.

For some reason, the hard drive had gone missing. According to city Human Resources, that August incident is still being investigated.

One of the shing poles was taken from an unsecured boat, and the other items were stolen from unlocked vehicles or from being left in the open, the report shows.

Carey told the deputy he wasnt going to talk because the deputy did not have a warrant. When the deputy said he didnt need a warrant because he had probable cause, Carey ran.

Authorities allegedly found the stolen items at the house where Carey was staying. The suspect is facing eight theft charges, four burglary charges, and a charge of resisting an ofcer.

How is a man judged? How about looking at his peers? These individuals have an inuence on President Obamas intellectual and political development which includes wealth redistribution and government health care.

President Obama believes that over time, people respond to civility and rational arguments. How is Russian aggression curtailed?

How about trying economic sanctions? The White House appears tentative in the face of global threats. Their approach to foreign policy is drawing criticism from opponents and allies alike.

Obama has also made red line ultimatums. Red line ultimatums should be taken seriously and those issuing them should have the power and resolute strength to back them up.

Does our president say what he means and mean what he says? Is he a man of his word? These problems wont go away with rhetoric. Our president wants the world to work within his rational terms.

The world isnt rational. If nancial sanctions prevail, does that mean Russia will give back Crimea and pull out of Georgia and Ukraine?

The world needs the president of the United States to be very presidential and have international credibility. President Obama will be judged historically.

The county government and city of Punta Gorda are informed by a big money developer that the animal shelter in Punta Gorda may lose its lease unless this big money developer is allowed to circumvent existing law by building higher-than-allowed condominiums on property adjacent to the shelter.

Or the developer will take property now leased to the animal shelter and use it to build condominiums on that land. Somewhere in the archives of Punta Gorda the lease for this land was lost or was just assumed on city land.

It belongs to us, and we will not honor a new lease unless you let us build what we want on the adjoining property.

Here we go again. Someone puts a gun to the head of government and the government melts. Lets tell these people we are going to use the law of eminent domain and take this property off their hands for the good of the people!

The shelter is a wonderful facility and needs to remain where it is. This developer is after his big bucks and doesnt give one hoot about the shelters importance to the community.

Let the people know they too are important and that it is in the best interest of the animals and community to keep the shelter.

Suggest the developer donate the land to the city. Woods Port CharlotteHealth care was very goodEditor: Before the desperate political smearing really gets underway, my husband and I would like to publicly thank the many people who so ably helped care for him during his recent long-term illness.

Lastly, this public thank you must also include even the personnel in the valet parking service to the many volunteers who wheeled me to his room almost every day and, yes, even the security per sonnel at the hospital must be thanked for taking time to help in any way they could.

I apologize if I have missed even one person because we feel your entire readership should know and appreciate the excellent care available in this area.

Here are some facts for Charlotte County taxpayers about the 1 percent sales tax. I attended the focus group meetings and spoke for the taxpayer.

County staff refused to allow public input, however the focus group voted to allow public input. A high-salaried, nonresident county employee provided a list of projects already scored by county administration.

There were presentations by the county staff supporting those projects favored by commissioners and administration. The focus group was then asked to score each project.

There was no available option for a zero score. Late in the process, the group objected to the poor and manipulative scoring system.

Individuals requesting our tax dollars gave presentations. I then read aloud their tax return. These projects were rejected by the focus group but our commissioners have declared that you and I will pay for the Justice Center expansion like it or not.

He stated that Charlotte County will not need an expansion for 20 years. This is government at its worst.

There is no sunshine in this administration, only smoke and mirrors. The vote is yours. A temporary sales tax that is still here after 20 years?

Neither is a priority and they provide no benet to 95 percent of Charlotte citizens. If Olean Boulevard is ever widened, the project should be funded under the countys capital improvements budget with funding from impact fees, gasoline taxes, etc.

The Piper Road situation reminds one of Murdock Village and the expensive bridge to nowhere. Millions of dollars already spent because it provides access to Airport Commerce Park, where many commercial lots, having full utility hookup, have languished for years awaiting new business purchase and establishment of operations.

Good dream, but no reality. Such lots remain unsold with no viable sales prospects. This very large construction cost for non-priority dreams could pave many deteriorating residential Charlotte County streets, negating the need for formation of street drainage MSBUs and saving property owners millions in special assessments.

Thats a big deal! The majority of Charlotte County citizens fall below that annual income level and are already unreasonably taxed by this government.

Smart, informed people will not fund any of the wish list dreams of our politicians and special interest groups. Get a tax cut!

Vote no to extend the sales tax extension. Your pocketbook will be the winner. I dont know what disgusts me more, the accusations by the two groups, Call to Action and Voice of the People, or the Sun, which chooses to print these unsubstantiated claims.

These are two anti-Catholic groups who have no Catholics in them and they wont prove it. If they knew the Catholic Church, they would know that when a priest is ordained he has allegiance to a particular bishop.

This is what the vow of obedience is all about. The bishop decides what assignments are made for the good of particular parishes. He is the head of the diocese, as fathers are the head of families.

Under the vow of celibacy, those two things cannot co-exist and be faithful to both. In the era, dissidents left the church and set up their own churches, run by laymen, without the popes authority.

So I say to Call to Action people and Voice people, go with our blessing. And get off our backs. And I hope you realize Im just dropping a stink bomb and believe in no such conspiracy on the part of the Democrats.

The letters I read from the tea party are funnier than the daily comics and those people really are quite easy to manipulate. Just watch how many names Ill be called in the days after this goes to print if it does.

Please keep them to less than words. Letters will be edited to length as well as for grammar and spelling. All letters must be signed with full name not initials.

An address and telephone number must be included. The phone number and address are not for publication, but must be provided.

Due to the number of letters received, we are able to run only one letter per person per month. The Letters to the Editor section is designed as a public forum for community discourse, and the opinions and statements made in letters are solely those of the individual writers.

The newspaper takes no responsibility for the content of these letters. Readers with access to the Internet may email Letters to the Editor at letters sun-herald.

Create the conditions for progress in Parkside. Its a symptom of Parksides problems that one of the cor ner lots at a planned gateway entrance into the redevelopment district is once again vacant and the other is a convenience store.

The combination hardly screams prosperity to prospective businesses. Thats the challenge Charlotte County planning and redevelopment staff face as they begin nalizing the districts revitalization plans following the nal public meeting tonight at the Cultural Center.

The market dictates what businesses survive or die in an industry or at any location, but the county can create conditions that hinder or help the market work.

Sometimes those market forces are far from here. For decades, the northeast corner of Harbor Boulevard and U.

One of the former stations closed following the merger of Chevron and Texaco, the latter required to divest itself of certain operations as a regulatory requirement of the deal.

The lack of competition didnt matter when ExxonMobil pulled its Mobil gas stations out of many Florida counties in , including the location opposite the abandoned Texaco station in Charlotte.

The Mobil parcel is now a 7-Eleven sans gas station. The County Commission made a strategic decision to rezone the Texaco property to allow for a wider variety of uses, specically a car lot.

The vote was met with skepticism by Parkside proponents who argued that a more aesthetically appealing business would enhance the planned gateway beautication project now being planned.

As Sun Staff Writer Gary Roberts reported Monday, that car lot is now gone, itself a victim of market and nancial forces.

Those same forces produced two thriving businesses a block north of Harbor, where Don Gasgarths Charlotte County Ford and the Joe Tiseos Pik N Run oc cupy opposing corners of Olean Boulevard, itself the object of a planned gateway improvement project.

Not coincidentally, both men are active and inuential stakeholders in the district. The point is that revitalization and beautication is about the future, not the present.

The goal should be to create conditions, both visually and regulatory, that promote economic activity within the district. The idea of a gateway is to entice motorists off the highway.

And while improvements at the two main intersections will be good for the businesses anking them, that will be a secondary benet.

The plan calls for extending those peripheral enhancements throughout the district, with multiuse trails, park makeovers, landscaping and potential zoning changes that give Parkside an identiable sense of place; a place where people want to live, work and play.

If successful, the plan will spur private investment in the area by residents, landlords and businesses that will increase property values and reduce the conditions of blight.

The county investment in infrastructure and amenities is the necessary catalyst needed to initiate the virtuous cycle so critical to Parksides future.

But it is the market, including the market of ideas that Parkside stakeholders bring to the discussion, that will ultimately determine whether the effort succeeds or fails.

A decade from now, if we are still debating the relative values of vacant prime parcels versus used car lots, well know which forces directed the districts destiny.

Thats the verdict of Brookings Institution scholar and former Clinton White House aide William Galston, a Democrat who has not been an unqualied admirer of this Democratic presidents foreign policy.

Whether Obamas decision to launch air strikes against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and Khorasan terrorists is a turning point, it was at least a move in the direction of a tradition in American foreign policy that has been conspicuously lacking in his administration.

That tradition was christened by Walter Russell Mead in his book, Special Providence, as the Jacksonian Impulse, one of four that have together shaped American foreign policy since the founding of the republic.

The others, named after American leaders, are the Hamiltonian, Wilsonian and Jeffersonian traditions. Jacksonians, like their namesake, Andrew Jackson, are generally not much interested in foreign policy.

But when Americans are attacked, they respond with righteous fury and a determination to utterly destroy the enemy. Franklin Roosevelt invoked that tradition when in his Pearl Harbor speech he said, in a line that drew not just applause but whoops and hollers, The American people, in their righteous might, will win through to absolute victory.

Thats not Obamas style. He came to ofce pledged to make nice with hostile Iran and unfriendly Russia. Even while announcing air strikes in Iraq and Syria, he made sure to say America needs allies and will not put boots on the ground.

Obamas reluctance to take a Jacksonian stand is obvious, but Islamic States beheadings of Americans were something he could not let pass unrebuked.

Which of Meads other three traditions has Obama followed? Certainly not the Hamiltonian tradition, named for Alexander Hamilton, which seeks to make the world safe for American commerce, accepts amoral concepts like national interest and balance of power and is willing to use force in morally ambiguous situations.

Obama has been willing to let Pacic and Atlantic trade negotiations languish in order to placate labor unions nostalgic for long-gone steel and automotive jobs.

He invokes but does not imitate the supposed realism of George H. He has allowed the budget sequester to hollow out American military forces.

One might expect Obama to embrace a Wilsonian affection for international institutions and respect for international law. Many Democrats criticized George W.

Bush for ignoring them. As a presidential candidate, Secretary of State John Kerry disparaged the trumped up, so-called coalition of the bribed, the coerced, the bought and the extorted.

But Bushs coalition that went into Iraq included more than 30 nations, most of them democracies. Kerrys and Obamas coalition against the Islamic State includes maybe eight, mostly autocracies.

He was happy to pocket the Nobel Peace Prize. But unlike Woodrow Wilson, who sought to subordinate the United States to the League of Nations, Obama seeks only applause, not approval, from international organizations.
